How often should I redesign or update my website? This is a question that we get asked often by our clients. First off, these are two different things. In short; you should be updating your website with new and fresh content on a regular basis while redesigning your website with a completely new design on average every 2-3 years.
This is an overly simple answer.
The more complicated answer on how often you should redesign your website is that it all depends… There are many factors that can shorten or lengthen a websites lifespan such as if your website was built up to search engine standards such as Google, in the beginning, the amount of content that would need to be updated, the complexity of your site, the frequency in which it is visited, etc.
To help you determine if it is time to get a fresh new web design, below is a list of indicators to help:
- It doesn’t help you drive demand.
If you find that your lead generation is low, it’s most likely time to revamp your website. If this is the case, find the source of the problem instead of aimlessly redesigning your website. Could it be that you are lacking the number of ‘Call To Actions’ on your website? Does your website pass the 3-second load time test? Do users know what your business or organization is all about under 5 seconds of coming to your website? Put yourself in your audience’s point of view, what do they ask themselves? What do you ask yourself when you are looking for a product or service? People want the facts fast and now, they will not wait for your website to load and they don’t want to bounce from page to page to decipher who and what you do.
- Your website visitors are bouncing.
If you are getting a good number of visitors but they seem to not stay on your site very long it’s possible that they came to your site by accident through irrelevant search results. For example, if your website is optimized or running AdWords for ‘dress shirts’ but you only sell ‘kids shirts’ you would be bringing in visitors that aren’t interested in your products and will leave right away. Make it clear to people what your site is about by using clear titles and meta descriptions while strategically using your AdWords.
- Your buyers aren’t finding your website in the first place.
If you aren’t appearing in search engines for your products or services in the location you serve, it’s time to do some Search Engine Optimization research. While SEO practices is an extensive lesson to be learned it is recommended to get in contact with an SEO expert that can point you in the right direction of where your website needs attention in this regard. Try doing a simple search yourself for the products or services you provide, Google will automatically pick up your location. If you are not being found on the first page, you may want to look into this further. Keep in mind that if your site is less than a year old it may just need a bit more time to start ranking, as new websites can take on average six to nine months before seeing any results. If you are not interested in waiting any longer you can always run an AdWords campaign to help speed up the process.
Bottom line is if your website is working well for you and you are seeing a large number of conversions through it there is no need to redesign your website. As the old saying goes if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
If you are getting a lot of business through your front door and not a lot through your website, it might be a good idea to take a look into a website redesign to increase your profits even more. The idea of a website is to have it work for you to generate leads while you sleep the night away. Think of it as your storefront that’s open 24 hours a day.
